Feeding generations : boarding house fare and family oral traditions : a collection of recipes / by Gift, Helen C.(CARDINAL)829987;
"Feeding Generations: Boarding House Fare and Family Oral Tradition: A Collection of Recipes" is an annotated compilation of traditional southern recipes, tested for modern use and set within the social context of the women to whom oral history gives credit. The book focuses on recipes as a form of tacit knowledge, illuminating the everyday lives of women at the turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. It starts at boarding houses in towns of Leighton and Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama, in the northwest corner area of the state known as the Shoals. The setting changes to rural Tennessee as the women examined in the book moved. History, social contect, and some economics of food culture are aspects touched on in "Feeding Generations." The remaining two-thirds of the book is devoted to the recipes themselves, with instructions and some historical notes.
