- Reverend Orin Churchill : North Carolina Baptist minister, 1819-1893 : his life in work and deeds / by Yarborough, P.I.,author.;
Born in New Bern, North Carolina in 1819, Orin Churchill was a seventh-generation descendant of Joshua Churchill who emigrated to Wethersfield, Connecticut in the 1630s. His father, Benjamin Churchill, left New England about 1810 and settled in New Bern, NC where he married and started a family. During the mid 1850s, Orin worked in Greensboro, NC as a printer and a Baptist preacher. While there, he purchased a print shop and published his own newspaper.During the Civil War, Rev. Churchill was a military chaplain and later became a circuit riding preacher and revivalist in the backcountry of central North Carolina. In July 1864, he took the responsibility of exposing the Heroes of American, a Unionist organization in that area. For his role in this scandal, Orin was scapegoated and harassed. After the war, he established many churches in the Piedmont section of NC and excelled as a father, farmer, preacher, missionary, and music teacher. He died in 1893.This book showcases over thirty letters and articles written by Rev. Churchill. It contains a wealth of information about his life, his thoughts, and the challenges he faced. Based primarily on detailed research by the author, it includes hundreds of footnotes and endnotes from a wide variety of sources.Many of the churches that Orin founded are identified; plus, there is background information on his children - especially his daughter, Caroline and his son, John R. Churchill. There is also a chapter about the life of his father, Benjamin, who was born in Connecticut. Benjamin's time in New Bern is covered as is his association with his cousin, Charles Churchill Jr. In addition, details concerning the family of Charles Churchill Jr. of New Bern, NC (1755 - 1813), are included.--Amazon.com

- Open for lunch / by Gaiser, Robin Russell,author.;
"In her new book, Open for Lunch, Robin Russell Gaiser writes of her encounters with a dozen strangers in casual lunch spots from upstate New York to Asheville, North Carolina. She began these encounters almost by chance when she invited someone in line with her at a Subway restaurant to share her table. But as she pursued such encounters over the years, she gradually became "the reporter reporting on myself. Soon the stunning stories of my lunch mates took me deeply into my own narrative." Open for Lunch speaks from the heart, both about the moving, fascinating stories of the people she meets, but also about herself. In the words of Lois McMahon, PhD, "Gaiser is a survivor who has overcome personal tragedy and found healing and the ability to reach out to others to share her wisdom and strength. This book holds invaluable lessons for us all about pain, suffering, redemption, forgiveness, healing and love." -- Amazon.com
