Finale [sound recording] : a novel of the Reagan years / by Mallon, Thomas,1951-author.(CARDINAL)727166; Lane, Christopher,narrator.; Blackstone Audio, Inc.(CARDINAL)346395;
Read by Christopher Lane."Finale" takes listeners to the political gridiron of Washington in 1986, the wealthiest enclaves of Southern California, and the volcanic landscape of Iceland, where the president engages in two almost apocalyptic days of negotiation with Mikhail Gorbachev. Along with Soviet dissidents, illegal arms traders, and antinuclear activists, the novel's memorable characters include Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter, Pamela Harriman, John W. Hinckley, and even Bette Davis, with whom the president long ago appeared on screen. Several figures -- including a humbled, crafty Richard Nixon; the young, brilliantly acerbic Christopher Hitchens; and an anxious, astrology-dependent Nancy Reagan--become the eyes through which listeners see the last convulsions of the Cold War, the AIDS epidemic, a clash of ideologies, and a political revolution. At the center of it all -- but forever out of reach -- is Reagan himself, whose genial remoteness confounds his subordinates, his children, and the citizens who elected him.

Many of Chatham's records, for instance, were lost in a fire, and Yarmouth's records of the Revolutionary War period have been missing for years. Even so, many important Cape Cod town records still exist; the problem is that so few of them are in print. So it was fortuitous when Col. Leonard Smith stumbled upon a series of pamphlets published at Yarmouthport by Charles W. Swift in the early part of this century under the name Cape Cod Library of History and Genealogy. Although contributors to the Cape Cod Library included such celebrated genealogists as Josiah Paine (author of History of Harwich), William C. Smith (known for his History of Chatham), and Amos Otis (Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families), the series never reached a large audience, and is today virtually inaccessible. No library in the country holds the complete collection of 108 pamphlets. With great diligence, Col. Smith put together a complete collection for himself, arranged the pamphlets in the order in which they were published, and then, to make the material usable, compiled an index of names.--From publisher description.

LGBTQ in the 21st century / by H.W. Wilson Company,compiler.(CARDINAL)142786;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 175-177) and index.Issues explored in this title include the role of non-traditional same-sex families, and expanded protections for transgender people under the framework of civil rights. The acronym LGBTQ, standing for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, is an acronym created to refer to a broad group of people, living around the world and coming from a wide variety of different creeds and cultures, whose behavior is seen as "nonconformist" with regard to mainstream concepts of gender and sexuality. For most of history, those who failed to conform with mainstream ideas about gender and sexuality were forced to hide their behavior or face social and legal penalties that could even include execution. Over time, LGBTQ people have fought for equal rights under the law and the right to express their sexuality or gender without reprisal. The primary issues in the United States surrounding LGBTQ individuals concern the degree to which individuals have the right to determine their own gender and sexual identity and whether other individuals have the right to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals based on their cultural, religious, or personal beliefs. - Publisher/Preface
