Drawing fire : a Pawnee, artist, and Thunderbird in World War II / by Echohawk, Brummett,author.(CARDINAL)810430; Ellenbarger, Mark R.,author.(CARDINAL)783406; Riley, Trent,editor.(CARDINAL)783405; Childers, Ernest,writer of foreword.(CARDINAL)783404;
The quill of the thunderbird -- Bureau of Indian Affairs -- Van Gogh countryside -- Father, bless our soldiers -- The second day -- Counterattack time -- The Katy Line -- Avalanche -- The Anzio Abscess -- Postscript."In 1940, at the age of seventeen, Pawnee Indian artist Brummett Echohawk (1922-2006) enlisted in the 45th Infantry Division--the "Thunderbirds"--part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard in his home town of Pawnee, Oklahoma. General George Patton told the 45th that they were "one of the best if not the best division in the history of American arms." Drawing Fire, Echohawk's memoir of his military service, tells the epic true story of a young Pawnee artist serving in a unit composed largely of Native Americans during some of the most significant battles of the Second World War, including Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. Woven into the tapestry of Drawing Fire are Pawnee legends, language, and American Indian humor, all which offer a rare glimpse of the Native American experience in Europe during World War II. The book is supplemented by more than 40 combat sketches Echohawk made during the war. The foreword is by WWII veteran, Medal of Honor recipient, and Muscogee (Creek) Indian Lt. Col. Ernest Childers"--Provided by publisher.

Fly fishermen of Caldwell County, North Carolina : life stories / by Beane, Ron,1937-compiler.(CARDINAL)789794; Griffith, Gretchen,compiler.(CARDINAL)315134;
Newland Saunders -- Cap Wiese -- Charlie Bean -- Joe McDade -- Henry Wilson -- John Turner -- Cecil Herman -- Stanley Tuttle -- Bill Barlow -- Monte Seehorn -- Jay Reese -- Ken Beard -- James Henson -- Wayne Storie -- Kyle Garrou -- Tony Woods -- Doug Suddreth -- Mark Miller -- Don McNeill -- Kevin Story -- Gene Swanson -- Brian Suddreth -- Bill Everhardt -- Jim Childers -- Randy Benfield -- Alen Baker -- Ron Beane.Out of the streams of western North Carolina come individual life stories of a group of men who set themselves apart by choice, The Fly Fishermen of Caldwell County. For generations they roamed the local creeks and rivers, and then adventured beyond, forever searching for the elusive next catch. Like scientists, they studied the trout they sought. As sportsmen, they combined knowledge and passion to create flies and rods that accomplished their goals. As environmentalists they joined forces to protect the waters they fished. Compiled by Ron Beane and Gretchen Griffith, this book is written by the fishermen themselves or by their families.
