Skaven : clans and markings of the under-empire / by Hodgson, Neil.(CARDINAL)823873;
This book is an indespensable guide to the clans and markings of the Skaven -- a nefarious race of ratmen that swarm beneath the surface of the Warhammer world. Within these full color pages you will find hundreds of illustrations of Skaven warriors, banners, and shield designs festooned with runes and symbols. ----- THE VERMINOUS HORDE: Examples of all the Skaven's iconic warriors are shown, from Skavenslaves and Clanrats to Stormvermin and Warlords. The Skaven's more unusual troops, war machines and fighting beasts are also illustrated, including Assassins, Plague Monks, Doomwheels and Rat Ogres, as well as the highly feared Grey Seers. ----- THE SKAVEN CLANS: This guide depicts the armor, banners, shields, colourations and iconography of dozens of different Skaven clans, including the Greater Cland and numerous Warlord Clans from all across the Under-Empire. The characteristic traits and most recognisable markings of these clans are described, as well as details of infamous Skaven regiments, and the mysterious Council of Thirteen who rule over all Skavendom.

Actors fascinate us in part because they live out the truths we cannot-or do not-want to live out ourselves. In his latest book, acclaimed photographer Howard Schatz develops upon his well-received monthly feature for Vanity Fair, "In Character." Schatz' mastery of his craft is demonstrated as he himself acts, taking on the role of a director and giving his subjects detailed situations to explore, which are listed with the resulting image. The actors featured here-including John Malkovich, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Douglas, Colin Firth, Laurence Fishburne, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Amy Poehler, and Geoffrey Rush, among other illustrious greats-demonstrate their skill for improvisation while Schatz captures the complexity of their emotional and physical range. This inventive collection is a richly entertaining revelation of the fantasy of transformation. Schatz does not simply create characters from these actors-he helps to reveal their humanity.

Includes bibliographical references."Metal arts have been integral to the social, religious, economic, and political lives of African peoples for millennia. This publication and the exhibition it accompanies consider some of the many ways metal arts in sub-Saharan Africa have sustained and enhanced material and spiritual well-being. Further, they examine the wide diversity and nuanced intersections of roles metal objects and metal artists have played in building communities through supporting leadership, enhancing religious practices, and cultivating social discourse. As a substance that is both malleable and strong, metal offers artists a means for creating dazzling forms with the power to last for centuries. Metal's permanence conveys the steadfastness of power and authority and concomitant trust and respect between individuals and polities. Some seventeen years ago, the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art's curator of African art, Dr. Susan Cooksey, identified works in metal as underrepresented in the collection and a priority for acquisitions going forward. With the current exhibition, 'Peace, Power, and Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa', she demonstrates how successfully this priority has been addressed at the Harn. At the same time, she includes outstanding metal objects from a private collection that represent the kinds of works the museum hopes to acquire in the future."--Provided by publisher.
