Josephine goes to the active attractive animals class where she meets Mrs. Mongrel, her teacher, Posie, a spotted elephant, and Rosie, a striped elephant, J.R. Giraffe, who is shy, and Samuel S. Snake, who cannot hiss. In her class, Hazel learns to play the trombone quickly and expresses a desire to play in an orchestra like her father. J.R. Giraffe plays the hoof organ. Hazel is scheduled to receive a reading lesson and loves the school. Josephine wants to see Hazel right after class.
