Die Yi and Xiao Lou are fellow singers under the same master in a Beijing opera troupe since they are very young and they tend to love each other implicitly. The title Farewell My Cocubine they performed causes a sensation in the capital city of Beijing and soon they become well-known. But later during the Anti-Japanese War Xiao Lou marries a street girl call Ju Xian. And then they don't perform together until after 1949. In the Cultural Revolution which takes place in the middle 1960s, Xiao Lou, under political pressure, exposes a lot of Die Yi's 'sins' or 'crimes' and hatred for each other grows in their hearts.
