A group of German college students are convinced to enlist after their teacher, Professor Kantorek, gives an impassioned speech about the honor of dying for their Fatherland. Paul Bäumer--sent to the Western Front where the fighting is most severe--is soon stripped of illusions about war being glorious. There is nothing but fear, pain, and the randomness of death. Paul is the sole survivor of his group and when he returns home, he denounces the war and his professor. Returned to the action, Paul tries to cope with the incessant fear that eats away at a soldier's insides, turning them hollow and empty.MPAA Rating: Not rated.DVD; Region 1, NTSC; 2.0 Dolby Digital mono.; full frame presentation, aspect ratio 1.33:1.Winner, 1930 Academy Awards for Best Director--Lewis Milestone; Best Picture--Universal Studios.

In the film that fueled her legendary career, Jean Harlow stars in this romantic comedy directed by Academy Award winner Frank Capra. Written to showcase Harlow's talent, looks and charm, Platinum Blonde is a glorious spoof of the newspaper business in New York City during the Depression. Ann Schuyler, a wealthy socialite, meets reporter Stew Smith and the two fall madly in love. The comedy begins as she tries to transform him from a ruffian newsman into a convincing gentleman. Stew, who is quick with wisecracks, is slow to realize the dangers of being a kept man. At first, he likes the idle life of the rich, but there's trouble in paradise. Soon this Cinderella Man turns the social register upside down with his mocking repartee. To his rescue is Gallagher, a sympathetic friend and co-worker at the newspaper. She comforts and consoles Stew and, in classic Capra style, helps him right into her own arms.--Container.MPAA rating: Not rated.DVD, region 1; full screen format (aspect ratio 1.33:1).
