Living in the shade of the silk cotton tree : the life and legacy of Walter Preston Stancil / by Atkinson, Willie Earl,Sr.,author.(CARDINAL)898800;
"Living in the Shade of the Silk Cotton Tree is the biography of the life and legacy of Walter Preston Stancil, born on April 21, 1898, in the upper northern corner farming community of O'Neals Township, Johnston County, North Carolina. He is the offspring of African-Americans whose family roots and history are melded, many times over, in the rich red clay soil of the area, from enslavement to landownership. Walter Preston's ancestral story has its beginnings in the North Carolina "slave plantation environment" of the early 1800s. His Grandfather Stephen Stancil, is born circa 1823 and his Grandmother Rachel Richardson-Stancil, is born in January 1830. The Stephen and Rachel Stancil family's story suggests a fortitude which enables them to survive and prosper in the post Civil War period of Reconstruction. They successfully raise their offspring on an eighty one acre plot of land purchased in 1875. Their story is of pride, hard work, and the celebration of family. This story is of a young Walter Preston who, though born into a land owning class of African-Americans, has decided to leave the security of his father's home, with the intention of making a better living from his knowledge of farming, as a sharecropper with the Whites in a depression era North Carolina. His eldest son, Willie Thurman, whom he hasn't seen since he was almost three, returns to him at the age of seventeen to "...see how he said." However, after a short reunion, the onset of World War II changes both their lives. The heart of the story reveals how wisdom and the lessons of survival and living are passed from one generation to the next. It is a story of strength through trial, survival through perseverance, integrity through adherence to moral and ethical principles and the love of family"--
